If you only need bulk media out of many WhatsApp chats at once, WhatSave or WhatsSnap will do it better than Mastros will today. Both handle multiple chats in one run and both take a date range; Mastros does neither. If you need media and contacts, group members and chat messages — from WhatsApp, Telegram and LinkedIn — Mastros is the one tool that covers all of it, and it is the only one here with an established rating.
That is the whole comparison in two sentences. The rest is the evidence.
Every figure below was read from the live Chrome Web Store listing or the vendor's own site on 24 August 2026. Store numbers move; the date is attached to each so you can tell when this stopped being current.
At a glance
| Tool | Price | Rating (24 Aug 2026) | Processing | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mastros | Free tier, then $9 / $18 per month | 5.0★, 34 ratings | In your browser | WhatsApp + Telegram + LinkedIn; media, members, contacts, messages |
| WhatSave | Free, open source | 0 ratings | In your browser | WhatsApp media only |
| WhatsSnap | Free, one-time Pro upgrade | 5.0★, 10 ratings | In your browser | WhatsApp media only |
| WA Media Downloader & Exporter | Free | 4.8★, 30 ratings | In your browser | WhatsApp media + chat export |
| WA – Download Group Phone Numbers | $8.99/month or $45 for six months | 3.9★, 347 ratings (self-reported) | Not stated | WhatsApp group numbers |
Two notes on that table, because they matter more than the stars.
"0 ratings" is a fact, not a dig. WhatSave is genuinely good software. It has simply not been reviewed yet, and an unreviewed extension is a different kind of bet from a reviewed one — in both directions. It also does not disclose its user count.
WA Web Plus's numbers come from its own marketing site, not from a store listing: 60,000+ users and 3.9★ from 347 ratings are the vendor's claims about itself. Treat them as claims. It is still the only tool here with anything like real scale, which is why it is in the table at all.
Where Mastros is behind
Mastros' WhatsApp media download picks media types, reaches back as far as you have scrolled, and works on one chat at a time. Three of the four alternatives do more than that.
| Capability | WhatSave | WhatsSnap | WA Media D&E | Mastros |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple chats in one run | ✅ | ✅ | — | ❌ |

| Free tier | Full | 50/day | Full | 100 profiles + 100 messages/month |
WhatsSnap's full-history scan is the one that stings. Mastros reads what WhatsApp Web has already rendered, which means scrolling back by hand to set how far a run reaches. WhatsSnap does not make you do that. If your job is "every photo in this group since January", it is the better tool for it today.
Multi-chat selection and a date-range filter appear in every competitor here and in none of the Mastros WhatsApp offering. That is the gap as it stands in August 2026, stated plainly rather than left for you to find.
What Mastros is actually for
Not "more media features". Two things:
One tool across five surfaces. WhatSave, WhatsSnap and WA Media Downloader each do one job on one platform. Mastros exports group members, chat messages, recent contacts and media, from WhatsApp Web and Telegram Web, plus LinkedIn and Sales Navigator searches — with Instagram and TikTok extensions in final testing. If your week involves pulling a group's member list on Monday and its shared files on Thursday, that is one install and one export format instead of three of each.
A track record. 5.0★ from 34 ratings, against 0, 10 and 30. Small numbers all round — this is a young category — but 34 is the largest of them and it is the only one that comes from a store listing rather than a vendor's own page.
The five, one at a time
Mastros — WhatsApp
Free tier gives 100 profiles and 100 messages a month with every tool unlocked and no account needed; Pro is $9/month and Scale $18/month, and the difference between them is volume, not features. Works on WhatsApp Web in Chrome or a Chromium browser. Everything is processed in the browser — nothing is sent to a Mastros server, and there is no automation of any kind: no sending, scheduling, auto-replies or broadcasting.
Media Download takes the open chat's photos, videos and voice notes in bulk. Alongside it: Group Members, Chat Messages and All Recent Contacts, exporting to CSV, JSON or JSONL.
Weakest at: one chat per run, no date filter, and you scroll back to set the reach.
The full WhatsApp media downloader page has the walkthrough.
WhatSave
Free and open source, with the source on GitHub — which is a stronger privacy claim than anyone else here can make, including us. "No telemetry, no servers" is checkable rather than asserted. Multi-chat runs, date filters, custom filenames, a ZIP per chat, and 2–8 concurrent downloads.
Last updated 20 August 2026, four days before this comparison was compiled.
Weakest at: zero ratings and an undisclosed user count. Nothing is wrong with it; there is simply no independent signal yet.
WhatsSnap
84 users, 5.0★ from 10 ratings. Free with a one-time Pro upgrade rather than a subscription, and 50 downloads a day on the free tier. Scans a chat's full history without manual scrolling, filters by date, detects duplicates on Pro, and can write a password-protected ZIP.
Weakest at: 84 users is a small base, and the daily free cap will find you quickly on a large group.
WA Media Downloader & Exporter
292 users, 4.8★ from 30 ratings, free. The broadest export formats of the media-only tools — HTML, JSON, CSV and XLSX alongside the media itself — and a date filter.
Weakest at: single chat per run, and no custom folder structure.
WA – Download Group Phone Numbers (WA Web Plus)
The only paid tool here: $8.99/month, or $45 for six months. It is really a different product — it pulls group phone numbers rather than media — and it is in this list because it is what people land on when searching for bulk WhatsApp extraction, and because it has the most users.
Weakest at: it is a subscription for one job, and 3.9★ is the lowest rating in this table. If you want group numbers, Mastros' Group Members tool does that on a free tier. We wrote about that comparison specifically in WA Web Plus alternatives.
WhatsApp's own Export Chat, for completeness
Before installing anything, check whether the built-in feature is enough. WhatsApp's Export Chat lives in the mobile app — open a chat, tap the contact or group name, choose Export Chat, then Attach Media.
It has hard caps. Reported limits are roughly 40,000 messages without media, and about 10,000 when media is attached — beyond that the export is truncated. It runs one chat at a time, it produces a _chat.txt plus loose media files rather than anything structured, and it goes through your phone's share sheet.
If you need one chat archived once, use it. It costs nothing and installs nothing. Every tool above exists because it does not scale past that.
Which one to use
- Bulk media from many chats, or a date range — WhatSave (open source, free) or WhatsSnap (full-history scan). Mastros does not do multi-chat runs today.
- Media plus a structured export of the conversation — WA Media Downloader & Exporter, or Mastros if you also want members and contacts.
- Media, members, contacts and messages, across more than WhatsApp — Mastros.
- One chat, one time — WhatsApp's own Export Chat.
- Group phone numbers only, and you want the most-used tool — WA Web Plus, at $8.99/month.
FAQ
What is the best free WhatsApp media downloader?
For bulk media across multiple chats, WhatSave — it is free, open source, handles multi-chat runs with date filters, and processes everything in the browser. It had no ratings as of 24 August 2026, so there is no independent signal on it yet. WA Media Downloader & Exporter is free too, has 4.8★ from 30 ratings, and adds HTML/JSON/CSV/XLSX export, but handles one chat per run.
Can I download all photos from a WhatsApp group at once?
Yes, with an extension on WhatsApp Web. WhatSave and WhatsSnap can do it across several groups in one run; WhatsSnap scans a chat's full history without you scrolling back. Mastros and WA Media Downloader & Exporter do one chat per run. WhatsApp's own Export Chat can attach media but truncates at roughly 10,000 messages.
Do these extensions see my WhatsApp messages?
The four browser extensions here all process data in your browser rather than on a server — they read what WhatsApp Web has already rendered in your own session. WhatSave publishes its source, so that claim is checkable rather than asserted. WA Web Plus does not state where its processing happens. None of them can reach a chat you are not in, and none of them need your WhatsApp password.
Is Mastros better than WhatSave for downloading media?
No, not for media alone. WhatSave handles multiple chats in one run, filters by date, writes a ZIP per chat and downloads concurrently; Mastros does none of those yet. Mastros is the better choice when you also need group members, contacts and chat messages exported as CSV, JSON or JSONL, or when you need the same tool for Telegram and LinkedIn.
How many ratings does each extension have?
As of 24 August 2026: Mastros 5.0★ from 34 ratings, WA Media Downloader & Exporter 4.8★ from 30, WhatsSnap 5.0★ from 10, and WhatSave none. WA Web Plus reports 3.9★ from 347 ratings on its own site rather than a store listing.
What is the limit on WhatsApp's built-in Export Chat?
Reported limits are around 40,000 messages without media and about 10,000 with media attached; longer chats are truncated. It exports one chat at a time from the mobile app, as a plain-text _chat.txt file with media as separate attachments.
