How TikTok engagement rate is calculated
TikTok engagement rate divides a video's interactions by its views. The standard form counts likes and comments; some reporting adds shares. Dividing by views rather than followers is what makes the number meaningful on TikTok, because the For You feed pushes a video to people who do not follow the account — a video from a 2,000-follower creator can collect 400,000 views, and a follower-based rate would report that as several thousand percent.

The Mastros TikTok extension uses this formula over a creator's last ~12 posts, leaves out pinned and promoted videos, and computes from TikTok's exact counts rather than the rounded "1.2M" the profile page displays. Rounded inputs are the quiet source of most disagreements between two tools' numbers.
How Instagram engagement rate is calculated
Instagram engagement rate divides a post's interactions by the account's follower count. The standard form counts likes and comments; saves and shares are added when the data is available, which for another creator's account it usually is not. Followers are the denominator because Instagram's reach still tracks the follower graph far more closely than TikTok's does.
Instagram ER = (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100
Across several posts, total the interactions and divide by followers multiplied by the number of posts. Averaging this way stops an account with more posts from scoring higher for the same audience response. The Mastros Instagram extension reports a profile's engagement rate over its last 12 posts on the same basis.
Typical engagement rate by follower count
Engagement rate falls as an audience grows, on both platforms. A small account talks to people who chose it deliberately; a large one accumulates followers who scroll past. The ranges below are the broad figures the industry publishes for each tier, and they are context rather than a target. Both columns divide by followers — including TikTok's, because that is how published tier tables are built. A view-based TikTok rate is a different measurement and is not comparable to this table.

These are typical published industry ranges rather than figures Mastros measured. Engagement varies far more by niche and audience than by follower count alone, so treat a band as a rough comparison and not a target.
Calculating engagement rate for many accounts at once
A calculator handles one account at a time, and that is its ceiling. Building a creator shortlist means gathering followers, likes, comments and views for a dozen recent posts per candidate, and the numbers a profile page shows are rounded — "1.2M" hides anything between 1,150,000 and 1,249,999, which is a wide margin to divide by.
