Add to ChromeHow is Instagram engagement rate calculated?
The standard formula, used by Rival IQ, Socialinsider and most agencies, is interactions divided by followers, times 100:
(likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100
Some reports add saves and shares to interactions; Instagram's own Insights show those for your account only. A second formula divides by reach instead of followers, which gives a higher number because only people who saw the post can interact with it. Use one formula consistently, and when you compare against a benchmark, check which one it used; the same post can read 0.5% by followers and 3% by reach.
How can I calculate the Instagram engagement rate for my business profile?
For one post, the calculator above. For a period, average the rate across the last 10 to 20 posts, since a single post is noise. Instagram Insights gives you likes, comments, saves, shares and reach per post for your own account; for any other account, the public counts are likes and comments, which is why the by-followers formula is the one everyone can compute. To get the rate for a whole profile at once, the Mastros Instagram extension reads the posts on a profile page and exports likes, comments and the rate per post on posts and reels exports, and per account beside every profile, follower and following row, averaged over the last 12 posts, to XLSX.
What is a good Instagram engagement rate?
It depends on account size and industry, and every benchmark report agrees that smaller accounts run higher. By followers:
| Segment | Engagement rate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| All brand accounts, median | 0.30% to 0.36% | Quid / Rival IQ 2026 |
| All accounts, average | About 0.48% to 0.50% | Socialinsider 2026 |
| Reels | About 1.23% | Socialinsider 2026 |
| Nano, 1K to 10K followers | 2% to 6% | 2026 compilations |
| Micro, 10K to 100K | About 1.5% to 3% | 2026 compilations |
| Mega, 1M plus | About 0.35% to 1% | 2026 compilations |
Rule of thumb: above 1% by followers puts a brand account in the top quarter of brand profiles; a nano account below 2% is underperforming its size. Engagement has been falling platform-wide, so a flat rate quarter to quarter is a good result.
What is the average Instagram engagement rate by industry?
| Industry | Engagement rate by followers | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Higher education | About 2.10% | Rival IQ 2026 |
| Sports, education | 2% to 5% | Engagement Rate Calc 2026 |
| Fashion, fitness, pets | 2% to 4%, pets highest | Creatorflow and Influencer Fee compilations, 2026 |
| Travel, food | 1% to 2.5% | Engagement Rate Calc 2026 |
| Retail, finance | 0.5% to 1.5% | Engagement Rate Calc 2026 |
| Tech, B2B, SaaS | 0.5% to 1.5% | Creatorflow 2026 |
| Nonprofits | About 0.56% | Rival IQ 2026 |
For a fashion brand, then, 1% is average and 2% is good; for a software company, 0.7% beats the industry median. The full table with sources and the platform-level figures is in Instagram statistics 2026.
How do top influencers maintain high engagement rates?
By staying in a niche where the audience is the same people every post, replying to comments in the first hour, posting Reels and carousels rather than single images, and refusing bought followers, which raise the denominator and nothing else. The mechanics are the same for a brand, and the calculator is how you check whether a change worked.

I tested the extension and everything I tried worked smoothly chat messages exported successfully to csv, group members were well organized, and media was downloaded into a zip file i especially liked that it can find a member’s profile name when it isn’t shown in the group.
