WhatsApp Export Chat Limit: Why It Stops at 40,000 Messages and How to Get Everything

WhatsApp's Export chat stops at 40,000 messages when you export without media, and at 10,000 when you include media. It counts backwards from the newest message, so a long conversation exports as its most recent stretch and the file begins mid-conversation with no warning. Everything older is not in the file, and re-running the export produces the same file. The Mastros WhatsApp extension takes a different route, exporting chat messages, group members and contacts from WhatsApp Web to CSV, JSON or JSONL.

The Mastros WhatsApp Chat Backup is one of the ways past it: it reads the conversation open in WhatsApp Web and saves every loaded message as a CSV row, with sender, text and time, from your own browser. Scroll back as far as you want the copy to reach; the export covers what WhatsApp Web has rendered, and Scale covers 500,000 messages a month.

Where exactly does the export cut off?

Two limits, both counted from the newest message backwards:

Export option Messages kept What the file is
Without media The newest 40,000 One .txt transcript
Include media The newest 10,000 A .zip with the transcript and the attachments

Nothing in the app says a cut happened. The transcript simply starts at message 40,001 from the end, which for a busy family group is a year or two ago and for a five-year business thread is most of it missing. People discover the limit when they scroll to the top of the file and find a reply to something that is not there.

The limit is WhatsApp's, applies on Android and iPhone alike, and is the same whether you export to email, to a drive or to another app. Re-exporting does not extend it; the most recent 40,000 are the same 40,000.

Why does the export start in the middle?

Because the file is written newest-first up to the cap, then reversed into chronological order. The oldest message in the file is the 40,000th most recent, wherever that falls. There is no way to choose a date range in Export chat, and no way to export "the older half"; the app offers one window and it is the recent one.

For a conversation under the limit, none of this matters, and Export chat is the quickest readable copy you can make on a phone. Above it, the limit is the whole problem.

How do I export a WhatsApp chat with more than 40,000 messages?

Three ways, from restorable-but-unreadable to readable-and-complete.

1. Take a full backup instead of an export

The local Android backup and the cloud backups have no message limit. They hold the entire chat.

  1. On Android, Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Back up, then copy the Databases folder under Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp to a computer.
  2. Or let the Google Drive or iCloud backup run.

Best for: keeping everything, restorably. The catch is that a backup is a restore image, not a document: it opens only in WhatsApp, on a phone, and cannot be read or searched. WhatsApp backup without Google Drive covers the restorable routes.

2. Export from WhatsApp Web with Mastros

  1. Install the Mastros WhatsApp extension from the Chrome Web Store and open web.whatsapp.com in Chrome or another Chromium browser.
  2. Open the conversation and scroll up. WhatsApp Web loads older messages as you scroll, so keep going until the history you want is on screen; a very long chat takes a while.
  3. Choose Chat Messages in the Mastros panel. It reads every loaded message, with who wrote it and when, and shows the fields before saving.
  4. Save as CSV, JSON or JSONL. One row per message, readable in Excel, searchable, sortable by sender or date.

Best for: a complete, readable copy of a long chat on a computer. The cap is your plan's monthly allowance rather than a fixed 40,000: Free covers 100 messages, Pro is $9 a month for 10,000, and Scale is $18 for 500,000, which is what a five-year thread needs. Nothing is uploaded; the file is written in your browser.

3. Export in pieces and stitch

There is no clean version of this. Export chat has no date range, so "export the older half" is not an option. The only manual route is to clear recent messages and export again, which destroys the conversation on your phone to get a file of it. Do not do this without a full backup first, and prefer method 2.

Which method should I use?

Export chat Full backup Mastros export
Message limit 40,000, or 10,000 with media None Plan allowance; 500,000 a month on Scale
Readable Yes, plain text No Yes, one row per message
Opens in Excel Awkwardly No Yes
Restores a phone No Yes No
Runs on The phone The phone A computer with WhatsApp Web
Price Free Free Free tier, then $9 / $18 a month

Who this is not for

  • Anyone who needs a restorable backup. The Mastros export is readable, not restorable. Take a full backup for that, and it has no limit.
  • Anyone whose chat is under 40,000 messages. Export chat is fine and quicker on a phone.
  • Anyone hoping to recover messages deleted before the export. No method here reads what is gone.

FAQ

Can I export an entire WhatsApp chat?

Not with Export chat once it is past 40,000 messages, or 10,000 with media; the app keeps the newest and drops the rest silently. A full backup holds everything but cannot be read. A WhatsApp Web export with the Mastros extension reads every loaded message into a CSV.

Why does my WhatsApp export not have all the messages?

Because the chat was longer than the limit. Export chat writes the most recent 40,000 messages (10,000 with media) and starts the file there. Nothing was lost from the phone; it was left out of the file.

Does the limit apply on iPhone as well as Android?

Yes. The numbers are WhatsApp's and the same on both, and the same whichever app you export to.

Will the other person know I exported the chat?

No. Export chat and a WhatsApp Web export both read what your own WhatsApp already shows. WhatsApp sends no notification and the Mastros extension sends nothing.

Is there a way to choose a date range when exporting?

Not in Export chat. On WhatsApp Web, scroll to the period you want loaded before running the Mastros export; the CSV carries a timestamp column, so you can filter to any range afterwards in Excel.
