Export WhatsApp Chat to Excel or CSV
By Elias Mahdavi, founder of Mastros. Builds the extensions and answers the support inbox. Updated .
- 1.Every loaded message of a chat or group as rows: date, time, sender and text.
- 2.A CSV (also JSON or JSONL) that opens in Excel or Google Sheets.
- 3.Columns, not a text file: WhatsApp's own export writes a single .txt that stops early.
Export WhatsApp chat history to Excel or CSV with Mastros: open the conversation in WhatsApp Web, choose Chat messages in the Mastros panel, press save, and the chat is written to a CSV with one message per row, which opens in Excel or Google Sheets. WhatsApp's built-in Export chat produces a text file that cuts off at a fixed number of messages and loses structure; Mastros reads the chat your session shows and keeps date, sender and text in separate columns.
What you get
- One row per message: date, time, sender and text, with system messages such as joins and leaves marked.
- Groups and one-to-one chats you are part of, plus the contact card.
- Newest first, back to the count you set (5,000 by default); the extension scrolls the history itself, and can take several chats in one run.
- CSV, JSON or JSONL.
- Free plan: 100 profiles and 100 messages a month; paid plans for longer chats.
- Nothing uploaded, nothing sent, hidden numbers stay hidden.
It only reads. Mastros never sends messages, never follows, likes or replies, never asks for a password or an API key, and processes every row in your browser. Nothing you export is sent to Mastros.
How to export a WhatsApp chat to Excel
- 01Add Mastros for WhatsApp from the Chrome Web Store.
- 02Open web.whatsapp.com and the chat.
- 03Open the Mastros panel, choose All messages of current chat, set how many, and start.
- 04Open the CSV in Excel or Google Sheets.
Export WhatsApp chat with media
Run the WhatsApp media downloader on the same chat and its photos, videos, voice notes and documents arrive as one ZIP beside the sheet, with a manifest.csv saying who sent each file and when. For the people in a group rather than what they wrote, see export WhatsApp contacts to Excel or CSV.
WhatsApp's own export, and when to use it
Use WhatsApp's Export chat when you need a quick text copy on your phone. Use Mastros when you need columns, or a record you can filter and search. Why the native file starts mid-conversation is explained in the WhatsApp export chat limit. Em português: exportar conversa do WhatsApp.
Export WhatsApp chat: questions
- Does the other person know I exported the chat?
- No. Nothing is sent and nothing changes in the chat.
- Is there a message limit?
- You set the count in the panel (5,000 by default) and Mastros scrolls back that far, newest first. Your plan's monthly allowance applies: 100 profiles and 100 messages on Free, more on Pro and Scale.
- Can I export a WhatsApp group chat?
- Yes, the same steps; the sender column tells you who wrote each message.
- Is it an Excel file?
- CSV, which Excel opens directly. JSON and JSONL are there for scripts.
- Can I export a chat as PDF?
- Not with Mastros. Open the CSV in Excel or Google Sheets and print or save as PDF from there.
