"Export WhatsApp contacts" means three different things, and each has a different answer. If your WhatsApp contacts are missing from your phone, that is a sync setting. If you want the numbers of people in a group who are not in your address book, that is a group members export, which the Mastros WhatsApp extension does from WhatsApp Web. If you want a spreadsheet or a Gmail import of everyone you talk to, that is an export to CSV, JSON or JSONL; the CSV opens in Excel and Google Sheets. This guide covers all three.
Where are my WhatsApp contacts, and how do I sync them to my phone?
WhatsApp has no contact list of its own. It reads your phone's address book and shows the people in it who use WhatsApp. So "WhatsApp contacts" are your phone contacts, and syncing means letting WhatsApp read them: on Android, Settings, Contacts, Sync; on iPhone, Settings, WhatsApp, Contacts. If a number you message is not in your address book, WhatsApp shows the number without a name and the person is not a contact anywhere.
That is why a group full of people you have never saved shows a list of numbers, and why there is no button in WhatsApp to save them all.
How do you save a group's members you do not have?
One at a time, WhatsApp lets you tap a number and add it. For a group of two hundred, use the extension:
- Open web.whatsapp.com in Chrome and open the group.
- Open the Mastros extension from the toolbar and choose Group Members.
- Run it. The extension reads the member list WhatsApp shows you, with each number and, where WhatsApp shows one, the saved name or the profile name.
- Download as CSV, JSON or JSONL; the CSV opens in Excel and Google Sheets.
You can import that file into Google Contacts (which syncs to your phone) or keep it as a list. WhatsApp shows a member's number to you or it does not, depending on their settings; the extension exports what is displayed and never reveals a hidden number.
How do you export WhatsApp contacts to Excel?
There is no export button in WhatsApp for contacts, because WhatsApp does not own the list. Two working routes:
- Export your phone contacts. On Android, Google Contacts, Export, CSV. On iPhone, iCloud Contacts on the web, select all, export vCard, then convert to CSV in Google Contacts. This gives you everyone in your address book, WhatsApp user or not.
- Export from WhatsApp Web with the extension. Group Members gives you the members of any group you are in. Contacts export gives you the people WhatsApp lists as contacts in your session. Either way the file is CSV, JSON or JSONL with one person per row; the CSV opens in Excel and Google Sheets.
The second route is the one to use when the list you want lives in WhatsApp and not in your address book.
How do you export WhatsApp contacts to Gmail?
Gmail contacts are Google Contacts. Take the CSV from either route above, open Google Contacts, choose Import, and upload the file. Google maps the name and phone columns; check the mapping on the preview before you confirm. Once imported, the contacts sync to every phone signed into that Google account, which is also the answer to "how do I get these numbers onto my new phone".
Can you export WhatsApp contacts to VCF?
Yes, indirectly. Google Contacts exports the imported list as vCard, which is the VCF format every phone and email client reads. WhatsApp itself can send one contact at a time as a vCard in a chat, which is fine for one person and useless for a group.
Is exporting a group's members allowed?
You are reading a list WhatsApp already shows you as a member. The extension sends nothing, adds nobody and does not run while you are away. The people in the file have privacy rights where they live; use the list for the purpose the group exists for, do not add it to marketing systems without a basis, and never pair it with bulk messaging tools. Why are my WhatsApp contacts not saving to my phone?
Because WhatsApp reads contacts; it does not write them. Save the number in your phone's contacts app, or import a list through Google Contacts.
Can I see blocked contacts in an export?
Blocked contacts are listed under Settings, Privacy, Blocked. They are not part of a group members export unless they are in the group.
Does the group know I exported the members?
No. Reading the member list sends nothing.
Can I export contacts from a WhatsApp Business account?

What does the export contain?
